Rebecca Farr was raised in Connecticut, where she was an avid lover of horses and
all things equine (saddle soap, velvet hard hats, carrots) from the young age of
nine or so. As the child of artists, she was allowed to paint her bedroom walls as
she saw fit, and of course, she painted horses, though the watercolors made that
difficult. As a young adult, she rode horses, owned horses, watched horses and
wished in general that she was a horse.
Rebecca studied different mediums of art through High School and College and then
received her Bachelors of Arts in Psychology. Years later, she found herself in
Santa Fe, a Framer by trade, and Artist by choice and a horse owner by chance.
“I feel that pastel is an excellent way to portray the horse. The pastel is velvety
on the paper, the color immediate and rich, and the strokes leave an interesting
texture. I see the horse as comical and serious at the same time, and in constant
movement. For this reason, I work from photographs that I take of horses, so that
I can capture a bit of their personality in the painting. The most important thing to
me is that I capture the life in the animal, the combination of mischievousness and
charm that makes each horse an individual.”
Rebecca shows her work at The Four Starr Gallery in Stonington, CT and Arlene
Siegle Gallery in Santa Fe, NM.
